The first is the material component: a small, forked, metal rod (like a tuning fork) attuned to the desired planar destination. The plane shift spell has two important limitations. Not all magic items need attunement, the word will appear in the item description if you do. Attunement- your character can bind / match / work with 3 different magical items at a time that require attunement. The DMG (page 46) has a specific paragraph on the Plane Shift spell as it relates to planar travel ( empasis mine): ago Tuning forks and attunement are two different things. Thankfully, the rules are actually very specific, but to find them we need to use an entirely different source book, the Dungeon Master's Guide. "A particular plane of existence", however is very loose language which allows the possibility of only needing a tuning fork attuned to the material plane to travel anywhere. ![]() The PHB specifies the components required for the Plane Shift (page 266) spell, but the language it uses doesn't provide the constraints we need ( emphasis mine):Ĭomponents: V, S, M (a forked, metal rod worth at least 250 gp, attuned to a particular plane of existence) I imagine the tuning fork makes a noise in the same 'key' as the plane. Usually that's at 440hz, known as the key of A in music talk. While the PHB spell uses pretty loose language, it is specified in the DMG In real life, a tuning fork is an instrument that when tapped against a sturdy object, makes a sound at a consistent key. ![]()
